Erró: The World Today

Guðmundur Guðmundsson, better known as Erró (b. 1932), is one of the best-known of contemporary Icelandic artists. He has been active on the avant-garde Parisian art scene since 1958, as one of the pioneers of Pop Art or the European narrative painting.

The exhibition comprises a diverse range of the artist’s work made in the past eleven years, which he has presented to the Reykjavík Art Museum. The works, which number over 60, illustrate the variety of materials, methods and techniques used by Erró in his art – they include collages, watercolours, enamels, paintings, and overpainted digital prints on canvas.

Erró bases his works on references to other images, which he juxtaposes in collages on a whole new level. The subjects often relate to the artist’s ideas about energy, and how it is manifested in the imagery of violence, natural disaster, eroticism, war, rowdiness and chaotic crowds.

Since 1989 Erró has presented over 4,000 works of his art to the Reykjavík Art Museum.
