Mikines – A Retrospective
A retrospective of the work of the distinguished Faroese painter Samuel Joensen-Mikines. Mikines has been called the father of Faroese painting: he was the first Faroese painter to make his living by his art and the first to achieve renown on foreign soil. His role as pioneer and exemplar for younger artists is similar to that of Jóhannes Kjarval in Icelandic visual art. This is the first retrospective of Mikines’s works in Iceland; most of the works here displayed are from the collection of the Faroe Islands Art Museum. The exhibition comprises more than forty landscape paintings and portraits from all stages of the artist’s career.
