Out in the Open: Iceland Academy of the Arts Graduation 2018

Reykjavík Art Museum has since 2003 housed the graduation exhibition of hundreds of students from the fine art and the design & architecture departments in the Iceland Academy of the Arts. The project reflect the studies, research and creation of the students in the previous three years. This exhibition holds fine art, graphic design, architecture, clothes design and product design.

From the curators

Spring is in the air. Graduating students unveil the fruits of three years of education. It is time to come Out in the Open. After a deep and personal working process, these students now become vulnerable, placing their creations in a gallery space, revealing them to the general public.
There is no doubt that the students work with their surroundings, interests, experience and imagination. They enrich the world with their ideas, interpretation and opinions.
Technology, material and identity are not new subjects. Quite the contrary. Nevertheless, our time shapes the students, redefining these matters for the here and now.
Many projects reflect on the present day, but at the same time build upon that which was before. We are enticed to go deeper and activate all senses. Familiar content, viewed from a new perspective, placed into a new context.

This harvest brings a unique feeling of freedom, but the wide expanse ahead is both intimidating and exciting. Where should I go next? What should I do now?
The graduation projects are the students’ provisions for their next steps. The cairn that guides the way to the next cairn. The possibilities are myriad, depending on the way in which one perceives the horizon.
The possibilities are myriad, depending on the way in which we perceive the horizon.
Graduating students continue their search into uncertainty more knowledgeable than ever: Out in the Open
