Ásmundarsafn

The sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson (1893–1982) designed, worked and lived in this beautiful building, now part of Reykjavík Art Museum. The white dome structure is surrounded by Sveinsson’s sculptures in the garden, both his earlier massive figures and his later light abstract compositions. The inside of the building offers a unique experience as the artist’s design, inspired by vernacular Mediterranean architecture, is a stand-alone work of art. Sveinsson’s work is often exhibited in there along with the works of other modern or contemporary artists.

A perfect visit on a walk through the Laugardalur area, with its nearby thermal pool, botanic garden and the Reykjavík Park and Zoo.

Ásmundur Sveinsson

Ásmundur Sveinsson (1893–1982) was one of the pioneers of Icelandic sculpture. In his early days his pieces invariably met with opposition and fierce criticism but over the years they have established themselves as one of the manifestations of the Icelandic narrative tradition, society and nature in the 20th century.

Sigtún, the site of the Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum, was once a barren rise of gravelly mounds on the outskirts of Reykjavík.
