Hekla Dögg chosen for a mid-career retrospective

At the exhibition opening of Guðjón Ketilsson: Jæja, it was announced that the next artist in the exhibition series of mid-career retrospectives at Kjarvalsstaðir is Hekla Dögg Jónsdóttir.

Hekla Dögg was born in 1969 and is the 7th artist to participate in the mid-career exhibition series presenting the career of a practising artist who has made their mark on the history of Icelandic art. Along with the exhibition, Reykjavík Art Museum publishes a catalogue with an overview oft he artist's career that puts it in context of art history and current times. Curator of the exhibition is Markús Þór Andrésson.

Hekla Dögg studied at Icelandic Collage of Arts and Crafts from 1991 to 1994. She attended an exchange program at the University of the Arts in Kiel, Germany, and additional studies at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Frankfurt am Main. After studying in Germany, Hekla went to the United States to study at the California Institute of the Arts, where she graduated with a BFA degree in 1996 and an MFA degree in 1999. Ever since graduation, Hekla has had an active career and has shown in museums and other exhibition venues both at home and abroad, including the National Gallery, Reykjavík Museum of Art,  Tate Modern in London and the Truck Contemporary Art Center in Calgary, Canada. Hekla has held the position of professor of Fine Art at the Icelandic University of the Arts from 2012 to 2021 and is one of the founders and a member of Kling & Bang.
