Exhibition Opening – Invasion IV: Margrét Helga Sesseljudóttir
Event location:
Ásmundarsafn

The fourth invader into the exhibition Art for the People in Ásmundarsafn is Margrét Helga Sesseljudóttir.

Margrét Helga Sesseljudóttir (b. 1988) is the final artist of four to take part in the exhibition series Invasion in Ásmundarsafn. The project aims to juxtapose works by living artists with those of Ásmundur Sveinsson and his museum.

Margrét Helga studied at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. Since her study, she has exhibited regularly in Iceland and abroad. In her art, she uses found material and herself to create sculptures and experiences. In her art, she uses found material and herself to create sculptures and experiences.

Margrét Helga has an unorthodox approach to sculpture which has recently resulted in a trilogy entitled I Was Celestial. It consists of two outdoor works of art. One is a kind of entrance to the museum of sculptor Sigurjón Ólafsson and the other a city gate near Laugardalur park in Reykjavík. The third installment is the works here in the museum of Ásmundur Sveinsson. All of the works are connected to the notion of the heavenly. They reach for the sky and reflect it. They are impermanent, not made to last. They can change during the time they are exhibited. The artists’ pieces here in Ásmundarsafn reflect each other and the architecture of the museum itself. They are meant to imitate certain aspects of the building but still keep their own special characteristics. They invade the space, change it and belong there but at the same time they don´t belong there.

Curator is Sigurður Trausti Traustason.

Sunday, 25 November at 15h00, Margrét Helga will host a guided tour of the exhibition.

There have been four INVASIONS into the exhibition Art for the People in 2018, where selected works by Ásmundur Sveinsson have been temporarily replaced or added to with the works of new artists. The first invader was Guðmundur Thoroddsen, second Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir / Shoplifer, third Mattías Rúnar Sigurðsson and now it is Margrét Helga‘s turn. They all create sculptures from different materials and their work throws an interesting light on the development of three-dimensional art, its materials and subjects.
