Screening: Last days of the Arctic FULLY BOOKED

A documentary on photographer Ragnar Axelsson, Last days of the Arctic, will be screened in Hafnarhús.

In the film, we follow Ragnar on his travels, visiting farmers in Iceland and the free spirited hunters of Greenland. The film (90 min.) provides an insight into lifestyles that are disappearing in the north. The film is produced by Sagafilm and directed by Magnús Viðar Sigurðsson. It has received critical acclaim and been shown at film festivals and television stations around the world. It has been nominated for numerous international awards and received the Icelandic Film and TV awards for best documentary and best original score.

Before the screening of the film, Einar Falur Ingólfsson, photographer and former colleague of Ragnar Axelsson, will give a short presentation in Icelandic. Einar Falur has worked at Morgunblaðið since 1981 as a photographer, journalist and literary critic, but also worked on his photographic art practice in various ways.

For over 40 years, Ragnar Axelsson – RAX, (b. 1958), has photographed the people, animals, and landscapes of the most remote regions of Greenland, Iceland, and Siberia. In stark black-and-white images, he captures the elemental, human experience of nature at the edge of the liveable world, making visible the extraordinary relationships between the people, animals and places of the Arctic and their extreme environment – relationships now being altered in profound and complex ways by the unprecedented changes in climate.
