A New Art Emerges
When we write the history of art we tend to concentrate on the periods
when an artistic idea or style reaches full maturity and becomes dominant
for a while. That is when leading artists emerge and their influence
spreads. But what happens when one approach takes over from
the preceding one? Is there a clean break as one current merges into
another or is there turbulence? In the mid-1960s everything seemed
to be changing and in Icelandic art a generational shift took place. The
long-dominant landscape tradition no longer answered the call of the
times and the abstract movement, influential in the 1950s, no longer
appealed younger artists. Similar changes occurred in literature, theatre
and music. The new generation wanted something totally different and
seemed willing to look in the most unlikely places for inspiration.
