Hafnarhúsið 20 ára

It is now 20 years since the visual arts landed on the harbor bank and the Reykjavik Art Museum opened its doors to Hafnarhús on April 19, 2000.

The Reykjavík Art Museum has established itself as the center of contemporary art in the city, where the Erro Museum and exhibitions of his works are also easily accessible.

Prior to the opening of the museum, Erro's art work was donated to the City of Reykjavik, but the motives were also ideas that the museum and the cultural characters that accompany it had a positive impact on human life in the city center and no less in the harbor area.

Now, 20 years later, the museum is no longer on the outskirts of the city center but in the heart of it and an important point of arrival for the citizens and their guests.

During these twenty years, the museum has held a pioneering exhibition in which visitors of all ages have been introduced to the diversity of visual arts, from the great stars of contemporary art to the works of the grassroots artists.

A large number of artists from all over the world have exhibited their works in many art exhibitions in the house and over two million guests have enjoyed them.

We are celebrating the birthday in the shadow of the closure of the museum, but we look forward to welcoming city residents to impressive exhibitions that have been unseen since March. We hope we can open again on May 4th.
